The episode’s opening showed us how the zombies that we all knew would descend upon Hershel’s farm got there, traveling from the city, through the countryside, into the forest, and—finally—ending up right near the farm just about the time that Rick and Shane got into their little Mexican standoff.  

 

The problem, as ever, for the Walking Dead is that when these well-choreographed ballets of blood and adrenaline finally arrive, they feel less earned and more like an attempt to distract from the RV-sized plot holes that preceded them. 

 

Lori, in the meantime, finally gives up trying to find Carl and joins Beth and Otis’ wife Patricia to find a vehicle to escape. But Patricia gets gnawed in the neck by a walker. This one is even bloodier than most as Patricia spurts everywhere as a group of walkers gather around for a celebratory munching.

 

The Hooded Stranger. A mysterious figure saves Andrea as the runs through the woods with zombies all around her. And salvation comes in the most badass form: a shrouded figure with a samurai sword and two arm-less zombies trailing behind her on leashes made of chains.

 

For the walking dead season 2 was almost a touching scene when Hershel gave Glenn his pocket watch, signifying that he’s cool with the whole Glenn and Maggie thing. I didn’t see that coming. Scott Wilson is a heck of an actor and his line about pawning off the watch for a night of drinking he no longer remembers might be as good as we’ll see in this show.
