The season 1 finale of Game of Thrones brought us the arrival of Daenerys Targaryna's baby dragons, so the bar was set incredibly high. Somehow the show managed to top that with a visual so shocking and amazing that I was left flabbergasted. But aside from the arrival of the Whitewalkers, the game of thrones season 2 dvd boxset  finale provided plenty of new directions for all of the characters, including a wedding, a facelift and a return appearance from a very dead character. 

 

There's no way that I can possibly go into every scene or every arc; we'd be here all day (or night). It might be most useful to just check in on several major characters. I wrote last week about how exciting it was to see how the characters reacted when they were literally under the gun -- we so often see them discussing various courses of action that it was a treat (at various points in the second half of the season, but especially in "Blackwater") to see them simply face down and deal with the challenges that came their way.

 

Take, for instance, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), who came up with the original plan of attack against King Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane): using wildfire, a green liquid that is set aflame, to decimate Stannis' fleet, rallying the soldiers to sneak-attack Stannis' men from behind the gate and ostensibly buying enough time to allow his father, Tywin (Charles Dance), to save the day.
